The following are screenshots for the Internet Explorer Browser version 6.0. Internet Explorer is the most widely used browser on the internet today, and is included with all Windows Operating Systems. The basic browser window by default has the menus listed first, then a toolbar with quick links to features within the program, then it has the address bar, and finally the window containing the website that is currently loaded. On the Help Menu there is an option called Online Support which will take you to Microsoft's Help and Support Center, there you can find useful information on any Microsoft product.



1. On the top of the browser window you will see the name of the current website you are looking at.


2. On the next line down you will see the browser menus, File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help.




3. The next line will contain the Toolbar , by default it will contain the basic browser buttons.

    •  Back - takes you back to the last website you were viewing.

    •  Forward - if you selected back and then need to view the website prior to selecting the back button this button will take you forward to that website.

    •  Stop - stops the current website from loading.

    •  Refresh - reloads the current website you are looking at.

    •  Home - takes you to the website that is set as your homepage.

    •  Search - opens a search sidebar to the left of the current website that allows you to use what is set as your default search engine, this can be customized to go through whatever search engine you like to use the most.

    •  Favorites - opens a sidebar to the left of the current website allowing you to go to websites that you have saved as a favorite, it also gives you the option to manage the favorites.

    •  Media - opens a sidebar to the left of the current website that allows you to open up popular media places to view video clips or radio stations that have web feed available. The sidebar contains the media player buttons and settings near the bottom.

    •  History - opens up a sidebar to the left of the window that contains you history, this will show you what websites you have visited. You do have some options on how to view this information, it can be viewed by date, site, most visited, or order visited today. The history can be cleared through the Internet Options control panel.

    •  Mail - opens up a side menu that allows you to read mail, create a new mail message, send a link, send a page, or read news. All these functions will be done through the Email Program specified in the Internet Options control panel.

    •  Print - allows you to print the current website you are viewing.

    •  Edit with Notepad - allows you to see the source or HTML coding for the current website in Notepad, you would be able to make changes to the source or HTML through this function. Those changes would not take affect until the edited Notepad document is uploaded to the web server that hosts that specific website. This is a function used mainly by web masters or web designers.

    •  Discussion - allows you to connect to a discussion or chat server.

Other Buttons may be added through plug-in programs, for example the search engine www.google.com has a free plug-in program available called the Google Toolbar, or they can be added by going to the View menu, selecting Toolbars, and selecting Customize.


4. The fourth line down will show the Address Bar , Go Button, and Links Button. The Address Bar will show you the internet address for the website you are viewing.

    a. The Go button can be used to make Internet Explorer go to a web address that you have typed into the address bar. The enter button on the keyboard will do the same thing.

    b. The Links button allows you to save web addresses as links, to do that you would drag the web pages icon by left clicking on it once and holding the left button of your mouse down, then release it right onto the Links button. When you click on the links menu the link you added should show up.



When selecting the Search button from the toolbar, it will open a side window showing the default Search Engine.

In this side menu you can perform web searches,

You can select New to clear the current search.

If multiple pages containing the search results are available you can access those by selecting Next. Selecting the drop down arrow by next allows you to view a specific page of results.

You can also customize what search engines will help in whatever search you are doing by selecting Customize.



When you select Customize off of the Search sidebar this is the window you will see.

    A. You can allow Internet Explorer to use the Search Assistant, which allows Internet Explorer to look for your Search and show you the results from many different Search engines.

    B. Or you can set Internet Explorer to use one Search engine for all searches.

Based on the available options for each type of material searched for, you have the ability to choose what search engines the Search Assistant will try and use.

    A. You will see the available Search Engines currently in use in the window below the category for the type of Search.

    B.To the right of these white windows you will see all of the available Search Engines for that specific category and you will be able to set it to use a different search engine or multiple ones if available.

The types of Search Categories available go beyond what is pictured at left. You can perform searches to find web pages, find personal information, find maps, word definitions, as well as be able to see previous searches.



When you click on the Favorites button you will see this Sidebar.

    A.You can organize the favorites by selecting the Organize button, this will allow you to move saved favorites to different folders, create new folders, rename current favorites, and delete old folders as well as old websites saved as a favorite.

    B. You can add current web pages you are viewing to your favorite list by selecting the Add button, you will then be asked where to Save it in the list of folders as well as what to name it.

By clicking on the Folder the Favorite was saved in will show you all of the favorites stored in that folder. Then you can select the Favorite you want to look at by left clicking on it once, it will then load the page in the window to the right.



When you select the Add button on the Favorites Sidebar or off of the Favorites menu this is the window you will see.

Internet Explorer will automatically want to name the website with what it is registered on the internet with, sometimes that is just the web address and other times it contains a short explanation of the site you are viewing.

From here you have the option to specify what folder to save the favorite in, if you want to create a new folder for this favorite, or if you would like to make this website available to you offline.



When you Select the Organize button off of the Favorites sidebar or on the Favorites Menu this is the Window you will see.

In this Window you will see what Favorite Folders you currently have set-up, as well as favorites saved outside of folders.

You have the options in here to Create folders, rename current folders or Favorites, move a specified favorite to a folder, or delete a favorite as well as a folder.

When selecting folders or favorites list on the right hand side of the window you will see in the left side of the window when that favorite or folder was last modified.



When Selecting the Media button from the toolbar, you will see this side window.

In this side window you will see media places and radio guide, which can be servers or sites that you can get media from as well as radio stations that broadcast over the internet.






In the bottom of the window you will see a basic media player, this allows you to control the playback of the media.



When selecting the History button from the toolbar, this is the window you will see.

The History contains all of the websites Internet Explorer has visited this can be viewed as a whole or can be searched through for a specific website, the history can be deleted and managed in the Internet Options control panel.

You can customize how you view, by clicking on the View button and then you will see the following options:

    •  By Date

    •  By Site

    •  By Most Visited

    •  By Order Visited Today

You can also Search for specific web sites in the History by using the Search tool.



The Mail Button on the toolbar as well as the Mail and News option on the tools menu will give you a drop down menu with 5 options:

    •  Read Mail - this option loads your default mail application so that you can read your email (The default mail application can be set to the Email Program of your choice through the Internet Options control panel).

    •  New Message - this option opens up a new message window, so that you can compose and send an email without opening up your Email Program.

    •  Send a Link - this option allows you to email the web address for the website you are currently viewing through your default Email Program by opening up a New Email message window containing the link to the website.

    •  Send a Page - this option allows you to email a copy of the website you are currently viewing through your default Email Program by opening up a New Email message window containing the website.

    •  Read News - this option allows you to open up your default Email Program to read news.




On the Tools menu you will see a listing for Internet Options. Open up this window by double left clicking on it. The Internet Options window allows you to control all the settings of the Internet Explorer browser. It is a tool used to manage the security of the program as well as what connection to use.

The next screenshots will go over each of the seven tabs in internet options and how the tools and settings work.



On the General tab of Internet Options you will see the general settings and tools of Internet Explorer.

    •  Home Page - this setting specifies the website Internet Explorer will load when opening up the program.

      •  Use Current - this will set the current website you have opened in IE to your homepage.

      •  Use Default - this will set the default website (usually a Microsoft or MSN website) as the homepage.

      •  Use Blank - this will set the homepage to open up saying about blank as the address which is just a stored blank page.

    •  Temporary Internet Files - this tool allows you to customize what Internet Explorer does with cookies and temporary internet files.

      •  Delete Cookies - this button deletes all the cookies in the temporary internet files folder.

      •  Delete Files - this button deletes all the temporary internet files from within the temporary internet file folder.

      •  Settings - this button allows you to customize how Internet Explorer will handle all cookies and all temporary internet files

    •  History - this tool allows you to clear the history as well as set how long web pages are stored within the history.

    •  Colors - allows you to customize the colors of the text, links, and background.

    •  Fonts - allows you to customize the fonts used on web pages and within items where no font was specified.

    •  Languages - allows you to set the language you will view websites in.

    •  Accessibility - allows you to have internet explorer ignore the specified settings on a webpage, for example the fonts and colors.



This is the Settings Window for the Temporary Internet Files option. Here you can customize how Internet explorer handles cookies and temporary internet files.

    •  You can set Internet Explorer to check for newer versions of pages it has stored in the Temporary Internet Files Folder.

    •  You can Change the location of the temporary internet files are stored on your hard drive as well as how much disk space Internet Explorer can use for this.

    •  You can view the files and objects contained in the temporary Internet Files Folder.



The Next tab of Internet Options will be the Security tab. This tab allows you to see the security level for each zone.

For all four zones you can specify how Internet Explorer will handle authentication, scripts, and programs built into web pages.

It is recommended to use the default levels, if you would like to customize these settings see the Microsoft Knowledgebase at http://support.microsoft.com individual setting may affect.




The Privacy Tab allows you to customize how Internet Explorer will handle individual Cookies based on their source.

    •  You will see a slide bar on the left side of this window that will show you the level it is currently set at. To the right of that slide bar it will tell you exactly what that level will do.

    •  You can also Import and manage the Advanced privacy settings here

    •  If you need to override this setting for any specific websites you would click edit.




When you click Edit in the Web Sites box on the Privacy Tab in Internet Explorer you will see the Per Site Privacy Actions window.

    •  On this window you can enter the exact web address and then specify whether or not Internet Explorer will allow or block cookies from this specific site.

    •  You can also remove previous Managed websites.



On the Content tab of Internet Options you will several tools and settings.

    •  The Content Advisor - when enabled this tool allows you to block certain websites based on their internet rating. This can be useful as a parental control, but can misinterpret a website because it is just based on their content rating. It is set-up with a password and can only be disabled with that password.

    •  Certificates - this tool checks and manages websites security certificates or SSL information.

    •  Personal Information -

      •  AutoComplete - stores previous entries on a website and when you go to enter that information into that website again it will suggest entries based on the previous stored entries.

      •  My Profile - saves personal information so that it can be used again and again for forms on websites.



On the Connections tab of Internet Options you will see the settings for the connection Internet Explorer will use to connect to the internet and view web pages'.

    •  Set-up uses the Internet Connection Wizard to help you create a Dial-up or Network Connection.

    •  Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings -

      •  Add - allows you to add a new connection.

      •  Remove - allows you to remove a connection listed in the white window to the left of this button.

      •  Settings - allows you to see the settings for the connection highlighted in the white window.

    •  Never dial a connection - if this is marked Internet Explorer will never prompt you to connect using a dial-up connection.

    •  Dial whenever a Network Connection is not Present - if this is marked Internet Explorer will look for a Local Area Network connection to connect to the internet through before trying to use the dial-up connection.

    •  Always Dial the Default Connection - if this is marked Internet Explorer will always try and connect through the dial-up connection that is set as the default connection.

    •  Local Area Network (LAN) Settings - these settings apply only to Local Area Network Connections.

      LAN Settings allows you to see and modify the exact settings for the LAN Connection.



On the Programs tab of Internet Options you can specify what programs your computer will use for different internet services. By default computers running Microsoft Windows will be set to use Microsoft Programs.

Internet Programs

    •  HTML editor - this is the program that will be used to edit html.

    •  Email - this is the program that will be used as the default email client.

    •  Newsgroups - this is the program that will handle to Newsgroup connections and downloads.

    •  Internet Call - this is the program that will handle an internet call, or function as a web phone.

    •  Calendar - this is the program that will contain the current calendar.

    •  Contact List - this is the program that will contain your contact list, which is similar to an address book.

Reset Web Settings - this resets Internet Explorer to the default home and search pages.

Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser - this should be checked, especially if you have more than one browser program on your computer.



On the Advanced Tab of Internet Options you will see the Advanced settings in 9 categories.

    Settings -

      •  Accessibility

      •  Browsing

      •  Http 1.1 Settings

      •  Java (Sun)

      •  Microsoft VM

      •  Multimedia

      •  Printing

      •  Search from the Address Bar

      •  Security
